LIONS FALL 74-58 AT AUSTIN PEAY

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn., – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team struggled from three-point range and had trouble slowing down Austin Peay in the paint Tuesday evening in a 74-58 road loss. The second straight defeat leaves the Lions with a 1-2 record on the season.

UNA hit just 6-of-27 three-point attempts on the night, including a 1-for-12 stretch near the end of the first half when the Governors took control. The home team stretched a close game into a double-digit lead midway through the second quarter and the Lions could never pull even.

The Governors scored 46 points in the paint and also held a commanding 27-4 advantage in bench scoring.

Alexis Callins was the lone bright spot for North Alabama. The sophomore from Martin, Tenn., scored a career-high 22 points. She also added career-best totals with six steals and three blocked shots.

The Lions trailed by only a single point before opening the second quarter with turnovers on their first five possessions.

UNA also missed 11 straight three-pointers before a trey by Callins with 11 seconds remaining made the score 34-23 heading into the break.

Claudia Bridges connected from long range in the opening minute of the third quarter. The Lions, however, would not hit from the floor again until the final minute of the period.

A 10-of-12 showing from the free throw line briefly kept UNA within striking distance. Two free throws by Macey Lee made the score 38-34 with 6:28 remaining. The Governors responded by going on a 14-2 run to grab a 52-36 lead with 42 seconds remaining. ASPU led 54-39 heading into the fourth quarter.

North Alabama trailed 58-39 midway through the fourth quarter before a three-point basket by Jade Moore and back-to-back ASPU turnovers led to transition baskets by the Lions. A steal and layup by Callins made the score 58-46 with 8:29 remaining but UNA would get no closer.

Moore finished the game with 10 points. Patrycia Jaworska also had nine points, all coming from the free throw line, and a team-high seven rebounds. Karle Pace led Austin Peay (2-1) with 17 points.

UNA will return home to host Georgia State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
