LIONS POST 74-71 WIN AT CHATTANOOGA

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., – Julia Strachan was 7-of-10 from three-point range and scored a game-high 25 points to lead the University of North Alabama women's basketball team to a 74-71 win at Chattanooga on Saturday. With the win, UNA evens its record at 5-5 on the season.

The Lions never trailed in the contest, but also never led by more than 10 points on the day. A basket by Skyler Gill made the score 70-60 with 3:52 remaining and UNA held on down the stretch.

After Chattanooga used an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to a single point in the final minute, the Mocs forced a turnover and had a chance to take the lead with 7.9 seconds remaining. The home team missed a jumper, however, and Alexis Callins was fouled after securing the defensive rebound.

The sophomore from Martin, Tenn., then sank two free throws with 2.3 seconds on the clock and Chattanooga missed a shot near midcourt that would have sent the game into overtime.

North Alabama led 16-15 at the end of the first quarter and stretched the lead to double digits late in the second. A three-pointer by Hina Suzuki gave the Lions a 32-22 lead with 3:54 remaining in the half.

UNA would not connect from the floor again until the final minute. A basket and free throw by Tiahna Sears completed a three-point play and made the score 37-32 with 56.3 seconds remaining in the half. After a defensive stop, Reagan Hune then connected on one of two free throws to push the lead to six.

Chattanooga added a basket as the clock ran out to make the score 38-34 at the break.

A 17-13 advantage by the Lions in the third quarter extended the lead to eight points at 55-47. After the Mocs closed the gap to two, UNA stretched the lead back to 10 on two occasions in the final period, including a steal and layup by Gill at the 3:52 mark.

Jade Moore, who played 37:40 for the game, added 16 points for North Alabama. Suzuki also finished with career-high totals that included 14 points and five rebounds.

UNA will play on Dec. 21 at Purdue. Tip-off is set for 10 a.m. (CST) at Mackey Arena on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette, Ind.
