SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH 6-0 WIN OVER TENNESSEE TECH

MONTGOMERY – The University of North Alabama softball team hit a pair of home runs on opening day and got a shutout performance in the circle to open the 2021 season with a 6-0 victory over Tennessee Tech Friday afternoon in Montgomery.
 
Megan Garst (1-0) scattered three hits in a complete-game effort as the Lions opened play with an impressive showing at the Alabama State Stinger Classic. Freshman Emma Broadfoot hit a three-run home run in her first collegiate at-bat to give UNA an early lead and the Eagles never threatened.
 
UNA wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. After an in-field single by Lexie Harper and a one-out walk by Emma Latham, Broadfoot homered to left field.
 
The Lions added to their lead in the bottom of the second. After a lead-off walk by Danielle de Ruiter, pinch-runner Mary Grayson Kilpatrick reached third before scoring on an RBI-single by Harper. Harper then scored on Latham's double to right field to give UNA a 5-0 lead.
 
Freshman Sidney Bevis wrapped up the scoring for UNA with a solo home run in the bottom of the third.
 
Garst, who took a no-hitter into the fourth inning after retiring the first 10 batters faced, finished with 11 strikeouts on the day. She recorded her 15th career shutout.
 
UNA will play two games in Montgomery on Saturday. The Lions will take on Western Carolina at 9:30 a.m. before facing Notre Dame at noon.
