SLOW START DOOMS UNA WOMEN AT STETSON

DELAND, Fla., – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team could not overcome a slow start Saturday in a 75-66 loss at Stetson. The fifth straight defeat leaves the Lions with a 5-15 overall record and 4-7 mark in ASUN Conference play.

UNA made only three field goals in the first quarter and faced a 26-6 deficit by the end of the opening frame. The Hatters led 43-23 at the half after both teams scored 17 points in the second quarter.

Stetson stretched the lead to 50-25 early in the third quarter before the Lions rallied. A basket by Jade More in the closing minute of the period made the score 61-45.

The Hatters connected on a jumper early in the fourth quarter before consecutive three-point baskets by Moore and Jaida Bond cut into the deficit. A basket and free throw by Macey Lee later completed a three-point play to make the score 67-54 with 6:49 remaining.

Stetson regained a 16-point advantage before the Lions made one more push. A three-pointer by Lee later cut the deficit to single digits. The trey from the right win made the score 74-66 at the 2:18 mark. The Lions got a stop on defense, but could not connect from the floor down the stretch. A free throw in the closing minute accounted for the final score.

Bond led UNA with 18 points. Sakyia White turned in another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Moore also reached double figures for the second straight game with 12 points while Lee's 10 points rounded out the top scorers for the Lions.

Yazz Wazeered-Din scored a career-high 30 points to lead Stetson (5-9 overall, 3-6 ASUN).

The same two teams will play again on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. (CST) at the Edmunds Center on the Stetson campus in DeLand, Fla.
