FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team scored six runs over the final three innings to record a 9-1 mercy-rule win over Tennessee State on Tuesday. The victory gives UNA a 4-2 record and completes a three-game sweep over the Tigers at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Complex.
After scoring single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead, the Lions opened the sixth inning with four straight hits to get the win. Singles by Danielle de Ruiter, Kalli Daniel and Katie Killen pushed the first run across the plate and set the stage for Meleah Hargett's three-run home run to right center.
UNA recorded 10 hits on the day after being limited to 11 hits in two games against the Tigers on Monday. Killen, Daniel and Sidney Bevis each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Tennessee State struck first with an RBI-triple in the top of the second inning. The Lions answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. After an RBI-single by Georgia Land tied the game, an infield hit by Daniel gave UNA a 2-1 lead. Killen followed with a single to center field to make the score 3-1.
The Lions added an RBI-ground out by de Ruiter in the fourth inning and an unearned run in the fifth to set the state for the big sixth inning.
Sidney Revels pitched all six innings to get the victory in the circle. The junior from Bonifay, Fla., scattered four hits and allowed one run with two strikeouts.
UNA will play three games at Southern this weekend. After playing a single game at 3 p.m. on Friday, the two teams are scheduled for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. the following day.
