FLORENCE – FGCU remained undefeated in league play with a 97-70 win at North Alabama Saturday in ASUN Conference women's basketball action. The loss leaves UNA with a 5-13 record and the Lions dip below the .500 mark in ASUN play for the first time this season with a 4-5 league record.
The Eagles, who lead the nation in three-point shooting, connected on 17-of-39 attempts from long range. Five players reached double figures in scoring as FGCU improved to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in ASUN play.
UNA trailed by two midway through the first quarter. A pair of free throws by Jaila Roberts made the score 12-10 at the 5:28 mark. FGCU, however, hit four straight treys during a 20-2 run to close the period and grab a 32-12 lead.
The Lions would get no closer than 17 points in the second quarter as the visitors continued to hit shots from long range. A three-pointer in the closing seconds gave the Eagles a 57-32 lead at the break.
A 14-2 run to start the third quarter quickly ended any hopes of a UNA comeback. UNA shot 48 percent from the field in the second half but could not keep pace.
Macey Lee led the Lions with a career-high 16 points. The freshman from Jackson, Tenn., was 5-of-10 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers. Jaida Bond added 15 points for UNA while Roberts had 11 points and 12 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double.
Kierstan Bell led FGCU with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
The same two team will play again on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
