UAB RALLIES FOR 4-1 WIN OVER UNA SOFTBALL

BIRMINGHAM – For the second straight season, UAB rallied for a win over the University of North Alabama softball team. After entering the bottom of the fourth inning trailing 1-0, the Blazers scored four straight runs to come away with a 4-1 home victory Wednesday evening. The loss leaves UNA with a 10-4 record to close out non-conference play.

Last year, UAB overcame a late 2-0 deficit to record a 4-2 victory in Florence. This season, the script was familiar at Mary Bowers Field in Birmingham.

Harley Stokes gave the Lions a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning. The blast came with two outs and cleared the right center field fence.

UAB responded in the bottom of the frame with consecutive hits to tie the score. A single and an RBI-double knotted the game at 1-1.

A two-out rally gave the Blazers the lead in the bottom of the fifth. A walk by KK Croker and a two-run home run by Analyse Petree put the home team ahead 3-1.

Emma Latham led off the sixth inning with a double and advanced to third on an error. She was stranded, however, after relief pitcher Olivia Valbak recorded three straight outs.

UAB tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Lions went down in order in the top of the seventh.

Five different UNA players had five hits each. In the circle, Megan Garst (4-3) took the loss. The senior worked the first five innings, allowing three earned runs off five hits. She struck out two and walked four. Alyssa Drogemuller pitched the sixth inning for the Lions.

The UNA softball team will now turn its attention to ASUN Conference play. The Lions host Bellarmine this weekend in a three-game series. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a single game at noon the following day.
