LION SOFTBALL EDGES TENNESSEE TECH 4-3

FLORENCE – Despite being held to just two hits, the University of North Alabama softball team manufactured enough runs to down Tennessee Tech 4-3 at home on Tuesday. The fourth straight win gives UNA a 15-3 record on the season.

A single by Sidney Bevis in the bottom of the first inning and a double by Madi Nunez in the fourth would be the only two hits the Lions would get on the day.

Lexie Harper led off the bottom of the first with a walk. She stole second base before reaching third on an infield single by Bevis. The two then executed a double steal of second and home to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Bevis reached third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Harley Stokes to increase the UNA lead.

The Golden Eagles were able to tie the game with a two-run home run by Jessie Lowery in the top of the third inning. UNA, however, regained the lead in the bottom of the frame without producing a hit.

Harper and Bevis each drew walks to lead off the inning before another double steal put runners at second and third with no outs. After a UNA strikeout, Harper scored on a sacrifice fly by Emma Latham. Bevis reached third on the play before being thrown out at the plate while trying to score on a mishandled ball by the TTU third baseman.

Tennessee Tech tied the game once again with a single run in the top of the fourth inning. The Golden Eagles strung together three hits in the frame, including an RBI-single that tied the game at 3-3. TTU finished the game with an 8-2 advantage in hits.

UNA's final run came in the bottom of the fifth. Nunez led off the inning with a double. She reached third on a groundout by Harper and scored on a throwing error to put the Lions ahead for good.

Laken Distefano (1-0) pitched the final three innings to get the win. The senior from Florence allowed one hit and one walk, retiring 9-of-11 batters faced.

North Alabama will return to ASUN play this weekend with a three-game series at Lipscomb. The two teams will play a double-header, beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a single game at the same time the next day.
