MEN’S TENNIS RALLIES FOR 4-3 ASUN WIN OVER BELLARMINE

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to rally for a 4-3 home victory Sunday in ASUN Conference action against Bellarmine. The win gives UNA a 3-9 overall record, and events the team's league mark at 1-1.

Bellarmine was able to take the early lead by winning two doubles matches. After Carlos Matarredona and Andreas Hansen gave the Lions an early advantage with a 6-1 win at the top spot, Bellarmine responded with two straight points to close out doubles play. A 6-4 win at No. 2 followed by a 7-6 win at No. 3 gave the Knights the early lead.

UNA had match point in the frame before Bellarmine rallied, including a 10-8 victory in the tiebreaker to grab an overall 1-0 lead.

Trailing by a single point entering singles play, the Lions won five of the first six singles matches to clinch the team win.

First, Jamie Bixby evened the score with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5. The Knights then regained the lead with a win at the No. 3 position.

North Alabama was able to answer by winning three straight. At No. 2 singles, Kyle Johnson won 6-2, 6-3 to tie the score, followed by a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 by Hansen to give UNA a 3-2 advantage.

Cade Reasons then clinched the match for the Lions by rallying for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory at the No. 6 position.

"This was just a great conference win for us," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "It was a very physical comeback. The guys got down after doubles play, but responded well. Jamie's (Bixby) quick point at No. 5 was hughe. Cade was down in the third set before rallying for the win. I am proud of how the players answered today."

After UNA clinched, the Knights added a three-set victory, featuring two tiebreakers at the top singles position.

The UNA men will play a Lipscomb on March 27. Match time is set for 2 p.m. on the LU campus in Nashville.
