LION SOFTBALL FALLS TWICE AT LIBERTY

LYNCHBURG, Va., – Liberty held a 19-5 advantage in hits in a double-header sweep over the University of North Alabama softball team on Saturday. With the 7-1 and 8-0 road losses, UNA falls to 17-13 overall and 5-6 in ASUN Conference play.

In the opener, the Flames plated runs in each of the first four innings, including leadoff home runs in the first two frames.

In the top of the second inning, the Lions strung together three straight singles to briefly cut the deficit to 2-1. Emma Latham led off the frame with a hit to right field. She reached third before scoring on an RBI-single by Georgia Land. UNA, however, would not get another hit in the game.

Liberty starter Emily Kirby retired 14 of the next 15 batters to get the pitching win. UNA was held to three hits, with Mary Grayson Kilpatrick getting the other single for the Lions in the second inning.

Three different UNA pitchers saw action. Maci Birdyshaw (4-2) got the loss after starting and working the first 2.1 innings. She allowed five runs off four hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

In the second game, the Lions were held to just two hits. Liberty built a 6-0 lead before a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning evoked the mercy-rule. The Flames also scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and had a four-run third.

After UNA's first eight batters were retired, Danielle de Ruiter reached on a two-out double in the top of the third inning. A walk by Harley Stokes in the top of the fourth inning and single by Land in the fifth represented the Lions' only other base runners.

Megan Garst (7-8) took the pitching loss. She allowed eight runs with three walks and three strikeouts.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game ASUN series with a single game Sunday at 9 a.m. (Central).
