LIONS GO 1-1 TO CLOSE OUT ASUN BEACH VOLLEYBALL TOURNEY

DELAND, Fla., – After knocking off Jacksonville earlier in the day, the University of North Alabama beach volleyball team lost a 4-1 decision to Coastal Carolina in the elimination round of the 2021 ASUN Conference Tournament. With the spit, UNA closes out its third season of existence with a 12-10 record.

In the early match, the two teams split the first four points to set up a winner-take-all scenario at the No. 2 position that went to a third set. After falling in the opening frame, UNA's Paula Klemperer and Natalie Kordt posted a 21-11 win to tie the score. The duo then recorded a 15-8 victory to give the Lions the overall win.

The win over the Dolphins marked North Alabama's first-ever victory in ASUN tournament play.

Jelena Girod and Lauren Quigley also posted a 21-15, 21-19 win at No. 3 while Mackenzie Martin and Catie Laden recorded a 21-16, 28-26 victory at the No. 4 spot.

The match against Coastal Carolina was decided when the Chanticleers won the first three matches at the No. 5, No. 4 and No. 1 positions.

North Alabama avoided the shutout when Girod and Quigley picked up a 21-19, 21-16 victory at No. 3. After falling in the opening set at No. 2, Klemperer and Kordt rallied with a 27-25 win in the second game. The duo, however, lost a 15-6 decision to close out play.

The 12-10 record marks the first winning season for UNA, which finished 5-7 last season and 10-12 in its first year of competition in 2019. The Lions' roster consists of four sophomores and eight freshmen.
