NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- North Alabama broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth inning and freshman
Will Haberstock picked up his first collegiate win with three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief as the Lions downed Lipscomb 5-3 in ASUN Conference baseball play.
It was the Lions fifth straight win over the Bisons this season and keeps UNA in the race for a possible ASUN Conference Tournament berth. With the win, UNA is now 7-33 overall and 6-14 in ASUN play. Lipscomb falls to 14-24 overall and 5-12 in the ASUN.
Lipscomb broke on top with a run in the third inning but UNA tied it with a run in the top of the fifth.
Luke Harper,
Harris Kain and
Drew Hudson all walked to load the bases and
Kylan Barnett drew a walk to force in the tying run.
Lipscomb went back on top 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth and UNA again rallied to tie the game with a run in the sixth.
Peyton Thomas walked,
Reid Singewald doubled and Thomas scored on an RBI-single by
Luke Harper to make it 2-2.
A run by Lipscomb in the bottom of the sixth gave the Bisons a 3-2 advantage and forced UNA starter
Chase Best out of the game. Best allowed three runs, just two earned, on six hits over five and a third innings. He struckout five.
Haberstock (1-3) then entered the game and held the Bisons scoreless the rest of the way, giving up just one hit while striking out four.
The Lions scored a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game again at 3-3. Devne singled and eventually scored on an RBI-single by Thomas.
UNA loaded the bases in the top of the eighth but could not score.
In the ninth, Thomas got a leadoff double and
Gerardo Miranda cam on to pinch run.
Kevin Brenning reached on an error on a sacrifice attempt and Miranda scored on the throw for the go-ahead run. An RBI-double by Harper scored Brenning to make it 5-3.
Haberstock retired the Bisons in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Harper was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in, while Thomas was also 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI.
The Lions and Bisons will play the final game of the series Sunday.
