WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COMES UP SHORT AT CENTRAL ARKANSAS

CONWAY, Ark., – Slow starts at the beginning of each half doomed the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Monday in a 61-53 loss at Central Arkansas. The second straight loss leaves UNA with a 7-10 overall record and 2-3 mark in ASUN Conference play.
 
UCA outscored the Lions 17-6 in the first quarter and 15-8 in the third. The Sugar Bears led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter before holding off a late UNA rally.
 
Central Arkansas was able to take control early by dominating the glass. The home team held a commanding 48-32 rebounding advantage and scored 19 second-chance points on the day.
 
UNA trailed 11-6 at the 3:05 mark of the first quarter, but could not connect from the floor for nearly seven minutes. A 14-1 run by the Sugar Bears gave the home team a 23-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
 
UCA led by as many as 17 points before a basket by Patrycja Jaworska with 6:06 remaining ended the drought. UNA was able to get within single digits before the half. Macey Lee hit 1-of-2 free throws to make the score 34-24 with 34 seconds remaining. The Lions then got a defensive stop and Jaworska hit a layup as time expired to cut the deficit to eight points at the break.
 
The Sugar Bears were able to regain momentum in the third quarter. UCA scored the first five points of the period and held the Lions scoreless until a basket by Skyler Gill at the 6:55 mark made the score 39-28. UCA, however, was able to extend its lead to 49-34 heading into the final period.
 
Two quick baskets to start the fourth quarter gave the Sugar Bears their largest lead at 53-34
 
UNA was able to slowly chip away at the deficit before running out of time. Back-to-back three-point baskets by Alexis Callins made the score 55-45 with 3:20 remaining.
 
A jumper by Reagan Hune later cut the deficit to 59-51 in the final minute and the Lions forced a turnover on the ensuing possession. UNA got three shots from the floor but failed to connect. After securing a defensive rebound, UCA was able to run the clock down to 10.3 seconds before connecting on two free throws to seal the win.
 
Callins led UNA with 18 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Lee added 11 points while Jade Moore rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 10 points. Gill also reached double figures with 10 rebounds.
 
UNA will play at Liberty on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. (CST) at Liberty Arena on the LU campus in Lynchburg, Va.
