LIONS FALL TO JACKSONVILLE STATE IN ASUN OPENER

FLORENCE – Jacksonville State remained undefeated in ASUN Conference play on Saturday with a 73-69 road win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team. The Gamecocks used a balanced scoring attack and a dominating performance on the glass on the night.
 
JSU overcame an early 10-0 deficit and grabbed its first lead early in the second quarter. After taking a 38-35 lead into the half, the visitors led by as many as 11 in the second half. UNA was able to trim the deficit to four points in the closing seconds before running out of time.
 
Hina Suzuki scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Lions. The senior from Hamamatsu, Japan was 6-of-10 from the floor, including a trio of three-point baskets. She also added six assists and a steal on the night.
 
After opening the game on a 10-0 run, the Lions struggled to score as the visitors closed the gap. UNA took a 21-19 lead into the second quarter. Two quick baskets by the Gamecocks then gave JSU its first lead of the game early in the second quarter.
 
JSU led by as many as six before a runner by Alexis Callins in the final minute made the score 38-35 at the break.
 
UNA trailed 52-48 at the end of the third quarter and did not connect from the floor for the first 6:56 of the fourth. By that time, the Gamecocks had built an 11-point lead.
 
A basket in the paint by Skyler Gill made the score 65-56 at the 3:04 mark. She later converted a three-point play with 44 seconds remaining to make it 68-64. The Lions, however, would get no closer.
 
Gill finished with a double-double that included 17 points and 11 rebounds. She also had five blocked shots to up her team-leading total to 22 on the year. Patrycja Jaworska rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 10 points.
 
Kennedy Gavin led Jacksonville State (11-3 overall, 2-0 ASUN) with 15 points and nine rebounds.
 
UNA will host Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Tip-off for the single game is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
