MISSISSIPPI STATE RUNS PAST UNA WOMEN 77-40

STARKVILLE, Miss., – A slow start doomed the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Friday in a 77-40 loss at Mississippi State. The Lions did not score for the first 6:12 of playing time as MSU opened the game on a 24-2 run and never looked back. The loss evens UNA's record at 1-1 on the season.

Turnovers and missed shots plagued the Lions throughout the game, especially in the first quarter. UNA missed its first nine shots from the floor and had eight turnovers as Mississippi State built an 18-0 lead. Two free throws by Alyssa Clutter at the 3:48 mark gave UNA its first points.

The lead reached 22 points before Skyler Gill connected in the paint for the Lions' first field goal with 1:45 remaining in the opening quarter. Mississippi State took a 27-9 lead into the second period.

The home team outscored UNA 19-8 in the second quarter to take a 46-17 lead into the half.

The Lions outscored Mississippi State 17-15 in the third quarter. A three-point basket by Hina Suzuki started the period. Another trey by Emma Kate Tittle later cut the deficit to 54-34 but UNA would get no closer. The Bulldogs closed the quarter with seven straight points, then outscored North Alabama 16-6 in the final frame.

Gill led the Lions with seven points. Jade Moore added six points and nine rebounds.

Mississippi State (2-0) had four players reached double figures in scoring, including two with double-doubles. Jerkaila Jordan led all scorers with 17 points for the Bulldogs.

UNA will return home to host La Verne on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
