UNA WOMEN COME UP SHORT AT SOUTHERN MISS 72-67

HATTIESBURG, Miss., – Southern Mississippi used a big third quarter to overcome a deficit at the half and hold off the University of North Alabama women's basketball team for a 72-67 home victory on Thursday. With the loss, the Lions fall to 2-2 on the season.
 
UNA led 38-35 at the break but was outscored 24-11 in the third period. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 10 points in the second half and held off a rally attempt by the Lions in the closing minutes.
 
North Alabama outscored Southern Mississippi in every quarter but the third, including an 18-14 margin in the final period. UNA closed the gap to four points on five different occasions down the stretch and got within three in the final minute.
 
A jumper by Skyler Gill with 17.9 seconds remaining made the score 70-67. USM then hit one of two free throws to extend the lead. The Lions missed a three-point attempt on the ensuing possession and the home team secured the defensive rebound to seal the win.
 
Gill led UNA with 18 points. The sophomore from Wichita, Kan., added eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Jade Moore added 12 points for the Lions, connecting on four three-pointers all in the first half. Hina Suzuki rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 11 points.
 
The two teams traded runs to start the game. North Alabama opened the contest on a 10-0 run. The Golden Eagles, however, followed with a 12-0 spurt of their own to take the lead. After a jumper by Gill tied the score at 12-12, the game featured six more lead changes in the opening quarter before the Lions settled for a 20-18 lead at the end of the period.
 
UNA stretched the lead to seven early in the second quarter on a three-pointer by Olivia Jones. The long-range shot came after Rhema Pegues grabbed an offensive rebound and found her teammate in the corner to give the Lions a 31-24 lead with 6:14 remaining.
 
Southern Miss was able to tie the game at 35-35 in the closing minute before a trey by Lexus Green with 21 seconds remaining gave UNA a 38-35 lead at the break.
 
For the game, North Alabama was 13-of-37 from three-point range. The Golden Eagles countered with a 44-31 rebounding advantage.
 
UNA will return home to host Alabama A&M on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
