WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TAKES DOWN ALABAMA A&M 66-48

FLORENCE – Three players reached double digits in scoring as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team knocked off Alabama A&M 66-48 Tuesday evening at Flowers Hall. The win gives the Lions a 3-2 record on the season.

UNA used a fast start to take control. Holding an early 7-5 lead, consecutive three-point baskets by Jade Moore and Hina Suzuki started a 12-4 run for the Lions. Skyler Gill later converted a three-point play with a basket and free throw to give North Alabama a 19-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Lions led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter before a late spurt by Alabama A&M cut the deficit to 33-24 at the half.

The Bulldogs got within six points in the third quarter but could get no closer. After a three-point play made the score 40-34 midway through the period, UNA answered with six straight points. A basket in the paint by Olivia Jones was followed by a transition bucket where Gill found Emma Kate Tittle for a layup. Tittle later took an assist from Moore to make the score 46-34 with 2:41 remaining in the third quarter.

After taking a 48-40 lead into the final period, an 18-8 run by the Lions put the game out of reach. Two free throws by Suzuki put UNA ahead 53-42 and the lead remained double digits the rest of the way.

Suzuki was 6-of-8 from the floor and finished with a game-high 20 points. Moore and Tittle added 12 points each while Gill flirted with a triple-double with 10 rebounds, nine points and seven assists. She added five blocked shots on the night.

UNA will travel to Columbus, Ohio on Sunday to face Ohio State. Tip-off is set for noon.
