UNA WOMEN OPEN SEASON WITH 78-68 WIN OVER CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

FLORENCE – Jade Moore scored 19 points to lead the University of North Alabama women's basketball team to a 78-68 season-opening win over Christian Brothers Monday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The win gives UNA a 1-0 start to the 2022-23 season.

Moore, a junior from Saint Louis, Mo., was 7-of-16 from the floor including five three-point baskets. Two of her treys came early in the fourth quarter after CBU had rallied to take the lead.

After a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the third quarter gave CBU the lead heading into the final period, Moore connected from the left corner to give the Lions a 57-56 lead with 9:37 remaining. Following a defensive stop, she hit from long range again to stretch the lead to four points.

A basket in the paint by freshman Cameron Jones gave UNA a 62-56 lead, but the Lions struggled to put the game away. The Lady Bucs got within two points midway through the quarter. A basket by the visitors made the score 67-65, but an 11-3 UNA run down the stretch sealed the win.

Skyler Gill scored seven points down the stretch to help the Lions pull away. With UNA holding the two-point lead, she hit two free throws, then converted a three-point play with a basket and free throw at the 2:17 mark to extend the lead to 72-65.

Four straight free throws by Hina Suzuki pushed the Lions lead to 76-65 before CBU connected from three-point range in the final minute. UNA answered with a jumper by Gill to close out the scoring.

North Alabama shot 50 percent from the floor in the first quarter to open the game with a 23-17 lead.  CBU, however, outscored the home team 16-12 in the second to make the score 35-33 at the half.

UNA led by as many as seven in the third quarter before the Lady Bucs closed the period on a 9-0 run to take their first lead.

Gill finished the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her eighth career double-double. She also blocked three shots. Hina Suzuki added 11 points and seven assists while Jones also finished in double figures with 10 points for the Lions.

Jeremia Montgomery led Christian Brothers, which counted the game as an exhibition, with 19 points.

UNA will play at Mississippi State on Friday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. on the MSU campus in Starkville.
