UNA MEN RALLY TO TOP MOREHEAD STATE 81-75

MOREHEAD, Ky., – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team overcame a 16-point deficit at the half to rally for an 81-75 road win at Morehead State on Saturday. Win caps a six-game road swing for the Lions and gives the team a 5-4 record on the season.

Morehead State, the preseason favorite to win the Ohio Valley Conference, took a 41-25 lead into the break. The Eagles led by as many as 18 points after scoring the first basket of the second half. The home team also later led 49-31 with 16:12 remaining.

The Lions began the comeback by slowly chipping away at the deficit. Four different UNA players scored during an 8-0 spurt to cut the lead to 10 points. A steal by KJ Johnson led to a basket by Bryson Dawkins at the 13:48 mark to make the score 49-39.

After MSU later pushed the lead back to 12, another 5-0 spurt by the Lions got the deficit to single digits. After Jacari Lane converted a three-point play, a basket by Deraje Agbaosi made the score 53-46 midway through the second half.

UNA got the deficit down to two points with another 9-0 run. Agbaosi started the run with a basket and free throw. Two more foul shots by Johnson later pulled the Lions to within 57-55 with 8:29 to play.

The Eagles got a three-point basket on the ensuing possession but could never pull away. After MSU regained an eight-point advantage, another surge by the Lions gave UNA its first lead of the second half.

North Alabama held the home team without a field goal for more than six minutes during a 17-1 run. A basket by Lane with 3:47 remaining tied the game at 66-66. On the ensuing Morehead State possession, a blocked shot by Dallas Howell led to a transition basket by Johnson to give UNA its first lead since being ahead 6-5 early in the contest.

The Lions continued the run to extend their lead. A basket by Lane was followed by two straight scores by Dawkins to put UNA ahead 76-68 in the final minute of play. A three-pointer by MSU with 24.8 seconds remaining represented the first made basket for the home team since the 6:17 mark and briefly cut the UNA lead to 79-74. The Lions, however, made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

The loss for Morehead State broke a 14-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents.

Johnson led all scorers with 22 points for the Lions. The junior transfer from Lipscomb was 12-of-14 from the free throw line. Lane added 15 points while Dawkins also reached double figures with 13 points on the day. Damian Forrest rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 12 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.

For the game, the Lions were 23-of-27 from the free throw line. UNA was 0-for-2 from three-point range but outscored the home team 56-34 in the paint.

UNA will return home to host Alabama State on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
