LIONS OPEN ASUN PLAY WITH 66-62 WIN AT JACKSONVILLE STATE

JACKSONVILLE – Three players reached double figures as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team opened ASUN Conference play with a 66-62 win at Jacksonville State. With the win, UNA improves to 9-5 on the season and opens league play with a 1-0 mark.

The two teams traded runs in the first half. Jacksonville State missed its first 13 shots from the floor as the Lions opened the game on a 15-0 run. A three-point basket by Dallas Howell gave UNA the 15-0 lead and prompted a Gamecocks timeout with exactly 15 minutes remaining in the half.

JSU responded with a 13-0 run of its own to pull to within two points, but could not pull even. The home team got the deficit to a single point on two different occasions. After a basket made the score 22-21, another 9-0 spurt by the Lions stretched the lead back to double digits. Consecutive baskets by KJ Johnson gave the Lions a 31-21 lead at the 2:40 mark.

The Gamecocks got within four before Detalian Brown scored in the closing seconds to give North Alabama a 33-27 lead at the break.

JSU took its first lead when a three-point basket at the 13:46 mark in the second half made the score 39-37. Jacari Lane's two free throws on the ensuing UNA possession tied the game. The game featured four more lead changes until a 9-0 spurt by the Lions put the visitors ahead for good.

Johnson and Will Soucie each connected on three-point plays to bookend the run for the Lions. A basket and free throw by Soucie with 9:36 remaining gave UNA a 52-44 lead.

North Alabama later stretched the lead to 11 before holding off a late surge by the home team. Soucie connected in the paint to make the score 63-52 at the 3:26 mark.

JSU closed the gap to a single possession in the final seconds. Damian Forrest, however, hit 1-of-2 free throws with 8.2 seconds remaining and the Gamecocks ran out of time.

Johnson led UNA with 16 points. Soucie added 15 points and 10 rebounds while Daniel Ortiz rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 14 points on the night.

Jacksonville State's Skyelar Potter led all scorers with 21 points.

UNA will host Bellarmine on Monday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at CB&S Arena at Flowers Hall.
