SOFTBALL DOWNS SAINT LOUIS 7-3 TO WIN BLACK AND GOLD INVITE

HATTIESBURG, Miss., - The University of North Alabama recorded 13 hits Sunday in a 7-3 victory over Saint Louis on the final day of the Southern Mississippi Black and Gold Invitational. With the win, the Lions wrap up play at the season-opening event with a 4-1 record to top all four participating teams.
 
The top of the UNA lineup combined to go 9-of-12 at the plate, including a 4-for-4 showing by leadoff hitter Lexie Harper.
 
The Lions struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. An RBI-double by Riley Grace Honeycutt, following by an RBI-single by Harper gave UNA the early 2-0 lead.
 
After Saint Louis tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, North Alabama took control with four runs in the bottom of the frame. UNA got four consecutive run-scoring singles from Hailey Jones, Meleah Hargett, Harley Stokes and Emma Broadfoot to go ahead 6-2.
 
The Billikens answered with a single run in the top of the fifth inning before UNA wrapped up the scoring on the day with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Stokes led off the inning with a walk and reached third base before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Grace Piotrowski.
 
Hailey Jones, who batted second in the lineup, was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Hargett also scored, drove in two runs and finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate.
 
Three UNA pitchers combined to limit Saint Louis to five hits. Sophie Golliver (1-0) picked up the win in the circle, working three middle innings. She allowed two runs off two hits with two strikeouts.
 
UNA will travel to Vicksburg, Miss., next weekend for five games at the Alcorn State Invitational.
