UNA WOMEN WIN THIRD STRAIGHT WITH 74-65 VICTORY AT EKU

RICHMOND, Ky., – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team shot 46.4 percent from the floor, including 13 three-point baskets Thursday in a 74-65 win at Eastern Kentucky. The third consecutive win gives UNA a 12-13 overall record and a 7-6 mark in ASUN Conference play.

Alexis Callins and Patrycja Jaworska combined for 41 points for the Lions, who could clinch a first-round bye in the upcoming ASUN Tournament with a win on Saturday. Callins led all scorers with 21 points. The sophomore from Martin, Tenn., was 8-of-14 from the floor, including five three-pointers. Jaworska added a career-high 20 points on the night.

After the Colonels scored the first four points of the game, UNA responded with a 10-1 run and never trailed again. Clinging to a one-point lead at the end of the opening quarter, consecutive baskets by Jaworska in the final minute gave the Lions a 20-15 lead.

The Lions made their move in the second quarter. A three-point basket by Jade Moore stretched the lead to double digits for the first time midway through the period. After EKU got within eight, a basket by Macey Lee and a trey by Jaworska pushed the lead to 40-27 with 1:07 remaining.

The Colonels answered with a layup, but a basket in the paint by Skyler Gill with 18 seconds to play gave UNA a 42-29 lead at the half.

Eastern Kentucky had its best showing in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions 18-11. After UNA stretched the lead to as many as 17 points early in the second half, the Lions went more than six minutes without a field goal.

EKU used the scoring drought to climb back into the game. After a basket at the 1:44 mark made the score 49-45, = the Colonels got a stop on defense. Callins, however, recorded a steal and layup. Two free throws by Hina Suzuki later pushed the lead to 53-45. The Lions led 53-47 heading into the final period.

The home team could get no closer in the fourth quarter. UNA quickly regained a double-digit lead and held off one more EKU charge down the stretch. After two free throws cut the deficit to six points with 4:32 to play, Callins connected on back-to-back three pointers to seal the win.

Moore finished the game with a trio of three-pointers and added 11 points on the night. Gill had six points and 10 rebounds while Suzuki dished out a career-high 12 assists.

UNA hosts Lipscomb Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. A victory over the Bisons would secure a first-round by for the Lions in the upcoming ASUN Conference Tournament.
