LIPSCOMB USES SECOND HALF COMEBACK TO TOP UNA MEN

FLORENCE – For the second straight game, the University of North Alabama men's basketball team let a double-digit lead in the second half slip away as Lipscomb rallied for a 75-72 victory Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The loss leaves UNA with a 9-18 overall record, including a 2-12 mark in ASUN Conference play.
 
The Lions led 40-23 at the break and stretched the lead to 19 after a basket by Will Soucie to start the second half. The Bisons, however, slowly chipped away at the deficit, tying the game at 64-64 with 4:02 remaining and taking their first lead two possessions later.
 
UNA led by 18 points Wednesday at Eastern Kentucky before falling 80-76 in overtime. Saturday's contest followed a similar script.
 
After Soucie's basket gave the Lions a 42-23 lead, the Lions hit just two shots from the floor over the next 7:30 of playing time. After Lipscomb cut the deficit to 10, consecutive three-point baskets by Daniel Ortiz stretched the lead to 57-41 with 10:27 remaining.
 
The Bisons responded with a 7-0 run to get back within single digits. A three-pointer by Dallas Howell later put UNA ahead 64-57 before another 7-0 spurt by the visitors knotted the game.
 
After UNA regained the lead on a free throw, Lipscomb went ahead for the first time on a basket by KJ Johnson to make the score 66-65 at the 2:49 mark. The game featured two more ties and two more lead changes from that point.
 
The Lions were able to tie the game at 70-70 and 72-72, but could never regain the lead. Two Lipscomb free throws put the Bisons ahead 74-72 with 21 seconds to play and UNA missed a three-pointer on its final possession. Another Lipscomb free throw with just over a second remaining accounted for the final score.
 
Ortiz led the Lions with a game-high 27 points. The total is a new program-high for UNA since making the jump to Division I in the 2018-19 season. Soucie added 12 points while Damian Forrest finished with 10 points on the night.
 
North Alabama will host Central Arkansas on Feb. 23. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
