LIONS CLINCH NO. 2 SEED, FIRST-ROUND BYE WITH 78-50 WIN OVER UCA

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team used a balanced scoring effort and a solid defensive performance during a 78-50 win over Central Arkansas Thursday evening at Flowers Hall. The win clinches the No. 2 seed in the West Division for Lions, who will receive a first-round bye in the upcoming ASUN Conference Tournament.

On Thursday, 10 different players scored, including four in double figures as UNA (13-14 overall, 8-7 ASUN) was able to win every quarter on the night. The Lions also held a 38-31 rebounding advantage after the Sugar Bears produced a 48-32 margin during the two teams' meeting earlier this season in Conway, Ark.

After Central Arkansas grabbed a 12-5 lead to start the game, the Lions took control with a 17-6 run to close the first quarter. UNA then outscored the visitors 15-9 in the second period to take a 37-27 lead into the half.

The lead remained double digits over the final two quarters. After the two teams traded baskets to start the third quarter, A three-pointer by Hina Suzuki started a 19-7 run for the Lions as the home team extended its lead to 22 points. A basket by Alexis Callins made the score 58-36 with 1:24 remaining in the third period.

UCA could get not closer in the final stanza. The Lions shot 50 percent from the floor in the second hand and got 21 points from its bench.

Julia Strachan led all scorers with 15 points. Patrycja Jaworska and Jade Moore added 11 points each while Callins turned in 10 points on the night. Skyler Gill added seven points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Ruth Balogun scored 11 points and was the only player to reach double figures for UCA (9-17 overall, 4-11 ASUN).

UNA will close the regular season on Saturday at Jacksonville State. Tip-off is set for 3:15 p.m. at Pete Matthews Coliseum on the JSU campus. In the ASUN tourney, the Lions will host the winner of the East Division No. 3 seed and the West Division No. 6 seed on Sunday, March 6. Tip-off time has not yet been set.
