OFFENSIVE WOES PLAGUE UNA MEN IN LOSS TO NORTH FLORIDA

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team struggled to connect from the floor for the second straight game Saturday in a 71-58 home loss to North Florida. The loss leaves UNA with a 9-14 overall record and 2-8 showing in ASUN Conference play.
 
Less than 48 hours after shooting 26.3 percent from the floor in a home loss to Jacksonville, the Lions were 20-of-72 (27.8 percent) on the day, including a 5-of-20 showing from three-point range.
 
North Florida took the lead for good midway through the first half. After a basket and free throw by Daniel Ortiz game UNA a 16-11 lead, the Lions missed eight of their next 10 shots. A UNF putback capped a 16-6 spurt by the visitors and gave the Ospreys a 27-22 lead with 4:24 remaining in the half.
 
UNA got within three, but North Florida was able to take a 32-27 lead into the break.
 
The two teams traded runs early in the second half before the Ospreys were able to stretch the lead to double digits. An 8-0 run put UNF ahead 50-37 at the 11:44 mark. Jamari Blackmon hit two free throws and Ortiz converted a turnover into a transition basket to cut the deficit to nine, but the Lions would get no closer.
 
UNF pushed the lead back to 14 and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
 
For the game, UNA held a 48-36 rebounding advantage, including a season-high 25 offensive boards. Ortiz finished with 14 points to lead the Lions, while Isaac Chatman turned in a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Detalian Brown rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 10 points while Will Soucie also pulled down 10 rebounds on the day.
 
Jarius Hicklen and Jose Placer combined for 43 points for North Florida (7-17 overall, 3-7 ASUN). Hicklen finished with a game-high 22 points.
 
UNA will play at Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. (CST) at Alico Arena on the FGCU campus in Fort Myers, Fla.
