SOFTBALL LIONS OPEN ASUN PLAY WITH SPLIT AGAINST STETSON

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team opened ASUN Conference play on Saturday with a split against Stetson. The Hatters won the opener 6-1 before UNA responded with a 9-0 mercy-rule win in the second game. The split gives the Lions a 22-6 record on the season, including a 1-1 start to ASUN play.
 
In the opener, Stetson's Lauren Hobbs limited UNA to a single run in the complete-game win. The Lions got 10 hits in the game but stranded nine runners and failed to get an extra-base hit.
 
Stetson scored its first four runs via the long ball. A two-run shot, followed by two solo home runs gave the visitors a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Hatters added an RBI-single in the fifth to extend the lead to five runs.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, an infield single by Hailey Jones scored Haven Kirby from third. The Lions, however, left runners on the corners when the inning ended and Stetson responded with a single run in the top of the sixth to wrap up the scoring.
 
Kirby was 2-for-3 at the plate while Jones and Lexie Harper each posted a 2-for-4 showing. Sidney Revels took the pitching loss after working the first 4.2 innings. She allowed five runs off seven hits and fell to 5-2 on the season.
 
The second game featured two scoreless innings before the UNA bats came alive. Georgia Land opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with an RBI-single through the left side.
 
Meleah Hargett led off the fourth inning with a single and later scored on an RBI-triple by Kirby.
 
Emma Broadfoot and Land each singled in the fifth inning to bring Harley Stokes to the plate. The senior hit her 39th career home run with a three-run shot to centerfield to give the Lions a 5-0 lead.
 
Another home run in the sixth inning ended the game via the mercy rule. After three walks loaded the bases, Land connected on her second career grand slam to close out the game. She finished the second game 3-for-4 with five RBI.
 
Stokes also went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the nightcap.
 
Maci Birdyshaw picked up the win in the circle. The sophomore from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., pitched a one-hit shutout, working all six innings. She struck out seven batters to add to her ASUN-leading total of 80 for the season and improved to 9-1 on the year.
 
The two teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Complex.
