SOFTBALL FALLS TWICE AT LIBERTY

LYNCHBURG, Va., – Liberty rallied to win the opening game, then held North Alabama scoreless in the second to sweep a pair of ASUN Conference softball matchups on Saturday. The 4-2 and 6-0 losses leave UNA with a 22-9 record on the season, including a 1-4 start to ASUN play.

In the opener, the Lions struck first in the bottom of the first inning. After Hailey Jones connected on a two-out single up the middle, Emma Broadfoot homered to left field. The blast put UNA on top 2-0, but the Lions would struggle to score the rest of the day.

UNA would get base runners in four of the next six innings, but could not get them home.

Liberty cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs and a runner on first base, an RBI-triple cut the lead in half.

A pair of home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the home team the lead for good. A solo shot led off the frame and gave the Flames a 3-2 lead. Another solo blast accounted for the final score.

Maci Birdyshaw was struck with the pitching loss for the Lions. She worked six innings, scattering six hits and allowing four runs. She also walked two and struck out three to fall to 9-2 on the season.

At the plate, Georgia Land was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

In the second game, Liberty's Karlie Keeney pitched a complete-game shutout. Five different UNA players recorded singles, but the Lions were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven runners during the game.

The Flames did all of their damage in the bottom of the first inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring all six runs.

Three different pitchers saw action for UNA in the second game. Sidney Revels (5-3)started and took the loss. Megan Warhurst and Elena Escobar also made appearances in the circle for the Lions.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
