LIONS SPLIT BEACH DUAL AGAINST CHATTANOOGA

FLORENCE – After dropping its first match of the season with a 3-2 home loss to visiting Chattanooga, the University of North Alabama beach volleyball team posted a 4-1 win in the second match to earn a split against the Mocs on Saturday. The split gives UNA a 5-1 record on the season while Chattanooga falls to 4-1 after suffering its first loss.

In the opener, Katie Gerig and Katy Floyd got the Lions off to a fast start with a 22-20, 21-8 victory at the No. 5 spot. The remaining four matches would all go to a third set with Chattanooga winning the next three to clinch the overall win.

After the Mocs secured points at the No. 4, No. 3 and No. 2 positions, UNA's Paula Klemperer and Taylor Seney wrapped up the scoring with a 21-15, 15-21, 15-12 victory at the No. 1 spot.

In the second match, UNA again grabbed an early lead with a strong showing at the bottom of the lineup. This time, victories at the No. 5 and No. 4 spots gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Gerig teamed with Lauren Quigley to post a 21-14, 21-15 win at No. 5. At No. 4, Floyd and Martha McLaruin extended the lead with a 21-19, 21-17 win.

Chattanooga got a default victory at No. 1 after a UNA player retired due to injury.

The Lions, however, finished strong. Seaney and Jelena Girod clinched the match with a 22-20, 21-16 win at No. 2. Catie Ladner and Mackenzie Martin wrapped up the scoring by rallying for a 19-21, 21-19, 15-11 win at the No. 3 spot.

UNA will travel to Chattanooga to play a tri-match against the Mocs and UNC-Wilmington on Thursday. The Lions will face UNCW at 1 p.m., followed by a match against the Mocs at 3 p.m.
