UNA SOFTBALL FALLS AT MISSISSIPPI STATE

STARKVILLE, Miss., – The University of North Alabama softball team's seven-game winning streak came to a close Wednesday evening with a 10-2 loss at Mississippi State. With the mercy-rule defeat, UNA falls to 18-4 on the season.

The Lions were held to their lowest offensive numbers of the season, scoring two runs off just three hits. The Bulldogs improved to 15-8 by using a six-run fourth inning.

MSU led 10-1 after the fourth frame. UNA scored a single run in the top of the fifth and left a runner stranded at third base that would have extended the game.

Mississippi State plated two runs each in the bottom of the first two innings to grab a 4-1 lead. UNA had its best chance to answer in the top of the third.

Three walks loaded the bases with only one out. After a strikeout gave the Bulldogs their second out of the frame, Emma Broadfoot drew a bases-loaded walk to score UNA's first run of the game. A pop-up, however, ended the scoring threat.

MSU broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth. After the Lions went down in order in the top of the frame, Mississippi State sent nine batters to the plate, scoring six runs off four hits, including three doubles.

Needing to score twice in the top of the fifth to extend the game, the Lions came close. Haven Kirby led off the inning with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Emma Broadfoot. Hailey Jones reached third on the play but was left on base.

Jones, Kirby and Sideny Bevis had the only three hits for the Lions. Maci Birdyshaw (7-1) started in the circle and worked the first two innings before suffering her first loss of the season.

UNA will play two games in Nashville on Friday at the Belmont Bruin Classic. The Lions will face host Belmont at noon, before playing Bradley at 2:45 p.m. Saturday's games at the event have been cancelled due to expected wintery weather. UNA will host Colgate in a double-header on Sunday.
