SOFTBALL DROPS 6-1 DECISION AT NO. 2 ALABAMA

TUSCALOOSA – Second-ranked Alabama scored all six runs in the first two innings Tuesday in a 6-1 home win over the University of North Alabama softball team. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Lions, who fall to 30-12 on the season.

The Crimson Tide (37-6) plated three runs each in the bottom of the first and second innings. UNA managed four hits on the day and scored a run in the top of the fifth. The Lions, however, were 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left five runners on base.

Alabama strung together three consecutive hits to open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Following back-to-back singles, a three-run home run by Megan Bloodworth put the Crimson Tide on top 3-0.

Another three-run outburst in the bottom of the second inning doubled the lead for the home team. Alabama got a leadoff home run by Kali Haivilin, a fielder's choice that scored a run from third base and a sacrifice fly in the frame. Following the sac fly, UNA's Harley Stokes threw out another potential run at the plate to end the inning.

Meleah Hargett led off the top of the fifth inning with a double to center field. She reached third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI-single by Haven Kirby.

Alabama turned a double-play to end a scoring threat in the top of the sixth and the Lions went down in order in the seventh to end the game.

Lexie Harper and Sidney Bevis joined Hargett and Kirby as the four UNA players to record a hit.

Elena Escobar started in the circle and took the loss for the Lions. She worked the first 1.1 innings, allowing four runs off five hits to fall to 1-2 on the year. Megan Warhurst pitched the final 4.2 innings, allowing two runs off two hits.

UNA will return to ASUN Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Jacksonville State. The two teams will play a double-header on Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a single game at 1 p.m. the following day.
