UNA SOFTBALL TOPS MEMPHIS 6-0

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team scored six runs off 15 hits while two pitchers combined for a shutout Thursday in a 6-0 home win over Memphis. The win gives UNA a 33-14 record on the season.

The Lions got on base early and often, but could only manage to plate runs in the bottom of the first and fifth innings. Lexie Harper led off the bottom of the first with a double to left center. Sidney Bevis then followed with an RBI-single to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

UNA stranded runners in each of the next three innings before a five-run fifth broke the game open. Consecutive singles by Harper and Bevis led off the frame before a single by Hailey Jones scored the second run of the game for the Lions.

Another single by Emma Broadfoot put two runners on with one out after the Tigers threw out a runner at the plate. Georgia Land then connected on a three-run home run to left field. It was the 15th home run of the season for the senior from Lawrenceburg, Tenn.

Harley Stokes added her 12th homer of the year and 47th of her career with a solo shot to right field to wrap up the scoring.

For the game, the Lions had six different players with multiple hits. Jones, Land and Haven Kirby each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Harper, Bevis and Broadfoot all posted 2-for-4 showings.

Maci Birdyshaw (16-2) picked up the pitching victory, allowing just two hits over the first five innings. Megan Warhurst completed the shutout with two innings of work. Each pitcher had two strikeouts.

UNA will host Central Arkansas this weekend in a key ASUN Conference series. UCA enters the series with a one-game lead over the Lions for first place in the ASUN West Division. The two teams will play a double-header at 2 p.m. on Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. the following day.
