UNA FALLS TO BAYLOR IN NISC SLUGFEST

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – No. 2 seed Baylor scored 18 runs off 20 hits to advance to the semi-final round of the National Invitational Softball Championship with an 18-8 victory Tuesday over the University of North Alabama softball team. UNA will face UNLV Wednesday morning in an elimination game for the right to claim the final spot in the four-team championship round.

Three different UNA pitchers struggled to contain the Bears' offense. After Baylor built an 11-2 lead, the Lions avoided a mercy-rule defeat with two runs each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. The Bears, however, scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to prevent a North Alabama rally.

UNA struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first innings. An RBI-double by Hailey Jones and a sacrifice fly by Georgia Land gave the Lions the early 2-0 lead.

Baylor responded with 11 unanswered runs. The Bears plated two runs in the top of the second inning to tie the game, then scored four in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to take the 11-2 advantage.

Facing the potential mercy-rule defeat, the Lions used a two-out rally to extend the game. A single by Emma Broadfoot was followed by a two-run home run by Harley Stokes to make the score 11-4. It was the 18th homer of the season for Stokes, who pulled into a tie with Land for the team lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, UNA inched closer. A ground ball by Jones scored a run and Broadfoot drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 11-6 with two outs and the bases loaded. The Bears, however, got out of the jam and put the game away with seven runs in the top of the seventh.

Baylor sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame, hitting two home runs and three doubles to take a commanding 18-6 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, a single by Sidney Bevis and a two-run home run by Haven Kirby wrapped up the scoring.

Stokes and Lexie Harper had three hits each to lead UNA, who totaled 12 hits for the game. Maci Birdyshaw (18-5) started and took the pitching loss for the Lions. Elena Escobar and Sophie Golliver also saw action in the circle.

First pitch against UNLV is set for noon (CST) at TC Colorado Field on Wednesday. The Rebels eliminated Tarleton State earlier on Tuesday.
