COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Holding a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, the University of North Alabama baseball team suffered a 5-4 loss in the opening game of a road double-header to Tennessee Tech and then fell 7-3 in game two.
UNA led the opener 4-0 after scoring three runs in the second inning and one in the third.
Jackson Ferrigno,
Drew Hudson and
Andrew Knight all walked to load the bases with no outs. Andin Johnon then walked to force in a run.
Levi Jensen made it five straight walks and brought in another run. The final run in the second scored on a
Gehrig Frei sacrifice fly.
In the third, Ferrigno reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Knight RBI-double.
Tech chipped away at the UNA lead with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
With UNA still leading 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth, reliever
Will Morris retired the first two batters before walking Theo Bryant IV. Peyton Mills then followed with a two-run homer to give the Eagles the win.
Morris (1-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits over two and two-thirds innings.
The Lions were held to just three hits in the opener.
In the second game, UNA scored single runs in the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead. Tennessee Tech then scored a run in the bottom of the second and added five in the fourth for a 6-2 lead. The Lions added a run in the sixth and the Eagles got one in the eighth to make the final count 7-3.
In the first,
Dominick McIntyre walked and scored on a
Jonathan Lane RBI-single.
In the second,
Drew Hudson singled and later scored on a throwing error.
UNA's final run in the sixth came when
Andin Johnson was hit-by-pitch and scored on a McIntyre double.
UNA starter
Raleigh Claunch pitched two innings before giving way to
Joey Malecha. Malecha (0-1), took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits over two innings.
Caden Barnett pitched the final four innings and allowed one run on two hits.
North Alabama hosts Murray State on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
