MACHADO HELPS POWER LIONS PAST AUSTIN PEAY 5-4

FLORENCE, Ala. -- A two-run home run by Kyle Machado in the third inning proved to be the difference as the University of North Alabama won the second game of its ASUN Conference series against Austin Peay, 5-4 at Mike Lane Field.

The Lions were able to close the door on the Governors in the seventh inning when Justin James came in with the bases loaded and got a fly-out to end the threat. He then pitched scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth to earn his second save in two days and third of the season.

UNA starter Kevin Henrich (2-2) pitched six and two-thirds innings to earn the win, allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

In taking its fifth straight win, the Lions improved to 14-36 overall and 8-21 in the ASUN.

UNA fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning but answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Jackson Ferrigno got a leadoff double to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 26 straight games. Jonathan Lane was then hit by pitch before Kyle Machado ripped a double to drive in two runs.

Drew Hudson made the most of his Senior Day by blasting a game-tying home run to leadoff the second inning and the Lions took the lead in the third inning when Lane doubled and Machado followed with a two-run homer, his ninth of the season.

Austin Peay scored one run in the seventh and loaded the bases on a fielder's choice and two walks in the inning before James came on to close the door.

The Lions and Governors are scheduled to play the final game of the series Sunday at 2 p.m.
