FLORENCE, Ala. (September 16, 2023) - North Alabama Volleyball went a perfect 3-0 at the UNA Invitational, adding two more wins to their tally after victories over Arkansas - Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State by scores of 3-0 on Saturday, Sept. 16 in CB&S Bank Arena at Flowers Hall.
UNA had their best attacking games of the season so far, setting new team highs in attack percentage with .481 against Mississippi Valley State and .378 against Arkansas - Pine Bluff. The Lions averaged 55 points, an even 42 kills, eight aces, five blocks, 39.5 assists and 41 assists between the two matches.
Junior outside hitter Brenna Tietz led with 20 total kills, with senior setter Kennedey Johnson leading in assists (54) and service aces (5). Graduate libero Luana Bulara tallied the most digs with 29, and graduate middle blocker Anna Katherine Griggs finished with six blocks, the most on the team.
Seven Lions either tied or set new career highs, highlighted by sophomore outside hitter Lucy Wedding with career highs in kills (3) and hitting percentage (.600) against Mississippi Valley State. Against the Lady Lions, Luana Bulara (nine assists), Kennedy Johnson (1.000 hitting percentage) and freshman outside hitter Avery Markham (.462 hitting percentage) achieved or tied new highs, and Brenna Tietz (.714 hitting percentage), Anna Katherine Griggs (one service ace) and Katy Floyd (one solo block) made or equaled new marks against the Devilettes.
It was the first time this season that the Lions earned all three wins in an invitational appearance, putting their record at 7-4 in invitationals this season. It was also the first time that UNA has held a team to under 10 points in a set, achieving this twice in each match. North Alabama maintains a perfect 4-0 record at home and 3-0 in three-set matches.
North Alabama Volleyball will return to CB&S Bank Arena at Flowers Hall to host Austin Peay in the second conference match of the season on Friday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m.
