NOTES
First Things First: The Lions continue their four-game match week after sweeping the Alabama State Hornets 3-0 in an away matchup on Sept. 5. UNA continues an early trend of playing teams for the first time, as George Washington, Georgetown and Old Dominion will face the Lions for the first time in either team's volleyball history. It will also be the first and only time this season that the Lions enter an invitational without prior history with any team.
Griggs Has a Career Night: Graduate middle blocker Anna Katherine Griggs had a career night in the match against the Hornets. She set her career high and had a game-high 16 kills. To go with the performance, she also contributed two blocks to lead all players to round out her night in the state capital.
Scouting the Revolutionaries: George Washington (0-5) is entering the invitational coming off a 3-0 loss to the College of Charleston on Sept. 2 after going 0-3 in the Eagle Invitational, hosted by Georgia Southern. The Revolutionaries play in the Atlantic 10 (A10) conference and currently sit in last place in the conference standings. They are led by senior right side hitter Liv Womble, who leads the team in points with 38.5. The Wilmington, N.C. native leads the team in kills with 33, while contributing an assist and two service aces on offense. On defense, she has nine digs and six blocks on the season. The Revolutionaries are coached by Katie Reifert in her second season.
Scouting the Hoyas: Georgetown (5-1) is coming into the invitational after beating Virginia Commonwealth 3-0 at the VCU Invitational. The Hoyas would go 2-1 in the event after beating Radford 3-1 and losing 1-3 to Iona. They play in the Big East Conference and are currently in a two-way tie with Seton Hall for the top spot. Graduate right side hitter Peyton Wilhite leads the Hoyas with 85.5 points, with her offensive production totaling 63 kills, six assists and six service aces. Defensively, she leads the Big East in blocks with 31 to go with 74 digs. Georgetown is led by first-year coach AJ Bonetti.
Scouting the Monarchs: Old Dominion (4-3) comes into the DC Showdown after falling to Atlantic Coastal Conference member Virginia in five sets, 2-3. The Monarchs are members of the Sun Belt Conference and sit in fourth place in the east division. Junior right side hitter Myah Conway holds the top spot on the team in points with 100. Her 88 kills lead the team to go with two assist and a service ace on offense so far. On the defensive side, she has 19 blocks and 32 digs — good for third and fourth on the team, respectively. Old Dominion is led by fourth-year coach Fred Chao.
