BATON ROUGE, La. (October 15, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team opens its third event of the fall season Wednesday morning, competing at the ITA Southern Regionals from Oct. 16-21 in Baton Rouge, La.
After two weekends away from the court, the Lions return to action for perhaps the most challenging test of the season. UNA will compete against the top teams in the Southern region and will look for a strong showing on the campus of LSU.
North Alabama took home 30 wins at the EKU Invite last time out and will look to build on that performance this week.
Playing in both singles and doubles competition, each player from North Alabama secured at least one win. Junior Lachlan Brain, sophomore Alberto Altur and freshman Satoru Nakajima finished with five wins each, with Brain and Nakajima leading the team with three double match wins. Altur also took home three singles wins, tying with senior Nazar Fedoryshyn for the team high.
ABOUT THE ITA SOUTHERN REGIONALS
The tournament features all eight Lions competing in singles and doubles action against players from other schools in the ITA Southern region. The tournament lasts six days with the tournament opening with a singles qualifying draw on Wednesday.
The round features up to two matches for the players, with two wins cementing a player's place into the main draw. Information on the main draw will be updated and finalized after qualifying rounds.
Junior Lachlan Brain and sophomore Birtan Duran begin the tournament in the main draw, but six Lions will begin the tournament in the qualifying round Wednesday morning. Sophomores Izan Orgiles, Whitman Davis and Alberto Altur are scheduled for first serves against the respective opponents, along with senior Nazar Fedoryshyn and the freshmen duo of Satoru Nakajima and Samu Dominguez.
