Women’s Basketball drops road contest at FGCU

Lions return home to face EKU on Thursday, Feb. 15

FORT MYERS, Fla. (February 10, 2024) – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team fell to Atlantic Sun Conference leader Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday, 84-42, at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Fla.

The conference leaders extended their perfect record in the ASUN to 11-0 while improving to 21-4 overall. UNA moves to 10-14 overall and 6-5 in the ASUN.

North Alabama and FGCU started off in a defensive battle in the first quarter with both teams looking to set the tone early. Neither team shot over 25 percent in the first period, but the Eagles created seven Lion turnovers to gain the early momentum.

FGCU's offense would get things going in the second quarter, but the Eagles and their ASUN-leading scoring defense continued to limit the UNA scoring opportunities. North Alabama scored 13 points in the frame, led by five quarter points from sophomore guard Rhema Pegues.

FGCU scored 43 points in the second half to seal the home win.

The scoring leaders for the Lions were freshman guard Veronaye Charlton and graduate forward Allie Craig Cruce with seven points apiece, while freshman guard Katie Criswell finished with six points. Charlton nearly secured a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds, and senior guard Sara Wohlgemuth registered a team-leading four assists.

UNA returns to Florence next week to host EKU on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m. and Bellarmine on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. for Senior Day.
