Lions impress in first day of Seminole Intercollegiate

UNA Men’s Golf leads nationally-ranked Mississippi State and others after two rounds in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 11, 2024) – Playing in a star-studded field, the University of North Alabama men's golf team wrapped up the first two rounds of the Seminole Intercollegiate on Monday in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Lions are in the middle of the pack after one day of golf, tied for seventh place with Southern Illinois with a 16-over-par 592 team score. UNA sits ahead of nationally-ranked Mississippi State, Boston College, in-state foes Troy and UAB, ASUN opponent Stetson and North Texas.

The 14-team field includes four teams in the Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Top 25 Poll, including No. 13 Florida State and No. 6 Ole Miss who lead after two days. No. 10 Arkansas is fourth place, while No. 22 Mississippi State sits in 10th three strokes behind UNA.

The Lions started with a 303 to sit in the bottom four, but turned it on in the second round with a one-over-par 289 to vault up four spots to seventh place. Reigning Savannah Intercollegiate champion Sebastian Bengtsson led the second round charge with a three-under-par 69, while freshman Andrew Ferworn was one-under par 71.

Bengtsson and Ferworn are both tied for 28th in the star-studded field at four-over-par 148. Bengtsson overcame a 79 in the first round with a consistent card in the second round, totaling four birdies, 13 pars and just one bogey on hole 13 to move up 42 spots. Ferworn had three birdies on the front nine in round two and finished one-under for the round.

Junior Chase Kaiser is third for UNA and one stroke back of the Lion leaders at five-over-par 149. His second round was also better than his first, shaving three strokes off his first round 76. He totaled three birdies on the front nine and finished one-over in round two. Kaiser had most of his success on par-threes, finishing those holes one-under.

As a unit, UNA ranked second in total pars with 121, trailing only No. 22 Mississippi State. The Lions had three more birdies than the Bulldogs with 16.
