Men’s Golf closes Seminole Intercollegiate in three-way tie

Lions finish ninth alongside Troy and Boston College in competitive field

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 12, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team finished the final round of the Seminole Intercollegiate on Tuesday in the Florida Panhandle, ending in a three-way tie with Troy and Boston College in ninth-place.
 
The Lions competed with four nationally-ranked teams in the 14-team field, leading No. 22 Mississippi State after the second round. The Bulldogs surged into the top six on the final day, while UNA slipped two spots with a 20-over-par 308 in the final round.
 
UNA finished with a team score of 36-over-par 900, which is just five strokes back of sixth place. The Lions finished ahead of North Texas, in-state foe UAB and High Point.
 
No. 6 ranked Ole Miss won the tournament with a 13-under-par 851, followed by No. 13 Florida State at eight-under-par 856. The Seminoles were led by Luke Clanton, who took individual medalist honors with an 11-under-par 205 final tally.
 
"We had the opportunity this week to play against some really good teams," said The Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach, Austin Phillips. "Definitely not our best performance of the year, but a learning experience. We got to see where we stack up against some really good teams, and that will get us ready for the next time we are in this position."
 
UNA was led by Sebastian Bengtsson with a 10-over-par 226 score to tie for 41st. Following him was Chase Kaiser and Eric Luo one stroke back to tie for 45th. Luo had the low round for the Lions on Tuesday at 75, jumping 16 spots up the leaderboard.
 
Rounding out the UNA card were freshman Andrew Ferworn one stroke back of Kaiser and Luo at 12-over-par 228, while John Logan finished right behind him at 13-over par 229. The five Lions combined for eight birdies in the final round.
 
UNA ranked second among all teams with 175 total pars, trailing Mississippi State by two. Troy also had 175 pars to tie UNA both in pars and in team score. Luo and Ferworn led the Lions with 37 pars apiece. Bengtsson and Kaiser had six birdies each.
 
The Lions are back in action March 25-26 at the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational hosted at the Silverado Resort (North) in Napa Valley, Calif.
