RICHMOND, Ky. (March 24, 2024) – The University of North Alabama baseball team fell on Sunday to Eastern Kentucky University in the third and final game of the series, as EKU followed wins on Friday and Saturday with a 5-1 win in the finale.
The Lions fall to 8-15 on the season, while the Colonels improve to 7-18. UNA is now 1-5 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Jackson Ferrigno cut an EKU lead to two in the fifth inning with an RBI single, but the Colonel bullpen held strong for the remainder of the match.
Anthony Pingeton started his third game of the season for UNA on Sunday and found himself in an early pitcher's duel. Pingeton pitched three consecutive scoreless frames to open the game, allowing just one baserunner in that span.
The Colonels opened up the scoring in the fourth inning with a two-out home run to right field that scored three runs.
UNA responded in the top of the fifth inning as
Zak Majer led off the frame with a walk before stealing second base. Ferrigno brought home Majer on a single to score the first North Alabama run of the game. Ferrigno stole second base, but EKU retired the side before UNA added to the score.
A pair of hits in the sixth inning scored another run for EKU, making the score 4-1 before extending the lead to 5-1 in the eighth on an infield single.
Pingeton exited the game in the seventh inning, bringing his final line to 6.2 innings, four runs and five strikeouts. Pingeton has now tossed 16.0 innings, allowing just six runs and two walks while striking out 10 batters in his three starts this season.
