Lions drop finale, but win series over Kennesaw State

UNA heads into final two weekends in prime position for tournament spot

FLORENCE, Ala. (April 21, 2024) – The University of North Alabama softball team hunted a series sweep on Sunday but settled for the series win, as Kennesaw State salvaged a three-game set with a 5-0 win over the Lions at Hilda B. Anderson Softball Stadium.

The Lions won both games of Saturday's doubleheader and limited the Owls to just one run over the last five meetings dating back to last season, but Kennesaw State went against that trend with five runs on Sunday.

With the loss, UNA moves to 30-15 overall and 11-7 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, which puts UNA in a tie for fourth alongside Jacksonville. Nonetheless, the series win over KSU gives UNA an opportunity to clinch its spot in the 2024 ASUN Championship as early as next weekend with six games remaining.

With the win, Kennesaw State improves to 14-32 overall and 6-12 in the ASUN. The Owls are now in sole possession of eighth place in the standings heading into the final six games. The top eight teams make the postseason tournament.

The Owls were led by a strong performance from graduate student Lindsey Kyte in the circle, who had her best outing of the season with a seven-inning shutout. The Lions also had solid pitching from Cassidy Duskin and Alivia Wilken, but were unable to keep pace. Duskin and Wilken will still settle for Saturday wins, as both combined to give up just four hits over 14.0 innings in the doubleheader.

The Lions had three hits on the day, including one each from junior Lillyanna Cartee and seniors Felicity Frame and Haven Kirby. KSU had eight hits, scoring a pair of runs in the first and last innings and one in the sixth.
