JACKSONVILLE (February 2, 2026) – University of North Alabama senior Alexsandra Alvarado was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Basketball Player and Newcomer of the Week, the league office on Monday afternoon.
Alvarado was UNA's offensive spark in home action vs. Stetson and FGCU. The Richmond, Calif. native led both games in scoring, including in North Alabama's massive win over the Eagles on Jan. 31. She was influential in securing the program's second-ever win over FGCU and the first since Feb. 29, 2020.
Alvarado becomes the first Lion this season to land either honor. She joins the long list of Lions to earn the marks, as this marks the 13th ASUN Player of the Week honor and 12th ASUN Newcomer of the Week award for the program. She joins former Lion Charity Gallegos as one of two Lions to win the awards simultaneously. Gallegos won both awards twice during the 2024-25 season on Dec. 30, 2024 and March 3, 2025.
The senior averaged 20 points and five assists per game, also providing solid defensive production with two steals per game. Alvarado displayed her long-range shooting expertise with a team-leading six made three-pointers.
Against Stetson, she had a game-high 21 points and tied her season high with six assists. She also contributed three rebounds to go with two steals. Alvarado followed the performance with another game-high outing, totaling 19 points against FGCU. She tied her season high with four-made three pointers vs. the Eagles with additional totals of four assists, two rebounds and two steals.
One of her plays from the Stetson game — a crossover dribble into a three-pointer — received national attention, including a post by the official NCAA March Madness account that garnered thousands of impressions on social media.
Alvarado and the Lions look to continue their winning ways this Wednesday, Feb. 4 against Austin Peay at 6 p.m. in CB&S Bank Arena.
