Schenk named to Walker’s staff as assistant coach

Goalkeeper coach has made prior stops at Gonzaga, Marshall and Indiana

FLORENCE, Ala. (March 10, 2026) – University of North Alabama head women's soccer coach Chris Walker announced the addition of Kevin Schenk as assistant coach Tuesday with a focus on goalkeepers.

Schenk joins the program following the departure of Tara McQueen, who joined the Auburn Tigers of the SEC to coach goalkeepers after three seasons at UNA.

"Kevin is an outstanding addition to our program," said head coach Chris Walker. "He brings a great understanding of the game, a strong work ethic and a genuine passion for developing student-athletes. We're excited to welcome him to Florence and to the North Alabama family, and I know he will make a tremendous impact on our players both on and off the pitch."

A Cary, Illinois, native, Schenk first began his collegiate coaching career at the University of Dubuque as a graduate assistant coach for the women's soccer team in 2019. He was responsible for goalkeeper training, scouting opponents and video breakdown. Other duties included organizing recruiting events, highlight videos, team travel and other administrative tasks. In 2019, the Spartans went 12-5-6, recording eight shutouts and advancing to the semifinals.

Schenk also was an assistant coach for the boys' and girls' soccer teams at Crystal Lake South high school in Illinois where he led the boys' team to an IHSA 2A state championship in 2018.

After one season at Dubuque, Schenk joined Indiana University as the goalkeeper coach. In his first season with the Hoosiers, Schenk mentored Big Ten All-Freshman Team honoree Jamie Gerstenberg. Gerstenberg was selected a Top Drawer Soccer No. 21 Freshman in the Top 100; in 16 matches she posted nine shutouts and a 0.49 goals-against average.

Following Indiana, Schenk joined the Thundering Herd of Marshall in 2023. Marshall went 7-9-1 and in six of those contests his goalkeepers posted shutouts.

In 2024, he joined the Gonzaga staff as an assistant coach where he served until joining the North Alabama staff. During his two seasons with the Bulldogs, he led them to 11 shutout victories with an overall win total of 18.

From 2013-2015, Schenk was a goalkeeper himself for the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He was a part of two teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament before the university closed the program's doors in 2015; the UW-Oshkosh Athletic Department announced the return of the program in the fall of 2027.

After the closing of the soccer program, he transferred to complete his bachelor's degree of business education at Illinois State. He followed that with his master's degree in sports management from the University of Dubuque.

Additionally, Schenk coached in the USL Super League and USL League One with the Spokane Zephyr and Spokane Velocity in 2025.

He coached the South Central Soccer Academy as the head coach of the U15/U17 boys' teams. Schenk spent time with the Iowa ODP and the Dubuque Soccer club as a goalkeeper coach for both.

Schenk has earned a United States Soccer Federation D License and a United Soccer Coaches Goalkeeping Level three diploma.

"I'm incredibly excited to be joining North Alabama women's soccer," said Schenk. "I would like to thank Head Coach Chris Walker and Assistant Coach Adam Sportsman for the opportunity to join the staff. Their bold vision for the program and commitment to excellence was evident in the interview process and something I'm eager to contribute to. I'm looking forward to building relationships with the team, helping our student-athletes grow both on and off the field, and working together to continue moving the program forward."
