ABOUT LAST GAME: North Alabama soccer made its way back into the win column with a 1-0 win over West Georgia on Thursday night at the University Soccer Stadium in Carrollton, Ga. The game's lone goal came from Meg Welsh, who netted her third goal of the season, matching her 2025 season total. Anna Fugarino and captain Adelyn Speight each added an assist to the goal. This victory marked the fourth consecutive shutout win in a conference opener game. The Lions defeated Kennesaw State 2-0 in 2023, West Georgia 3-0 in 2024 and Central Arkansas 1-0 last season. On Thursday, UNA boasted 19 shots, with 10 on goal and nine corners.
SERIES HISTORY: This is the eighth all-time meeting between the Lions and the Govs dating back to 2007. They met once during the Division II era and, since 2021, have competed six other times. UNA has earned one win in Florence and one in Clarksville since the transition to Division I, both of which came in 2025. Last time vs. the Govs, the Lions took a 2-1 win with goals from Gizelle El Assal and former Gov, Alana Owens, who scored the game-winner.
SCOUTING THE GOVS: The Govs enter this matchup with an overall record of 1-8-1 and a conference record of 0-1-0 after their 3-0 loss to UAC opponent Eastern Kentucky on Thursday night. Two of their losses have come to familiar UNA opponents, including Tennessee Tech and Chattanooga where the Govs fell 1-0 and 3-0, respectively. The Govs' lone win of the season came over UT Martin, 1-0, and their lone tie was against Indiana State, 1-1. Opponents have outscored the Govs 23-4. Redshirt junior Kayla Barr leads the Govs' offense with 10 shots on goal and one goal this season.
FOUR IN A ROW: North Alabama earned its fourth straight season with a conference opener shutout win after defeating West Georgia 1-0 on Thursday. In 2023, the Lions defeated then ASUN opponent Kennesaw State, 2-0. In 2024, UNA welcomed UWG to the ASUN with a 3-0 shutout while last season the team fought off Central Arkansas, 1-0 in Florence.
RESET THE RECORD: This season, the fastest goal in UNA's Division I history has been reset three times. On August 15 against UNC Asheville, freshman Maya Kelsch set the record as she scored just 1:59 minutes into the game. Four days later on August 19 against Union, senior Parker Martin reset that record as she scored just 53 seconds into the match. On Sept. 10, against Chattanooga, junior Anna Fugarino reset the record for the third time this season after scoring just 33 seconds into the game. The fastest goal in school history came from Chloe Roberts in 2010 against Nova Southeastern just 11 seconds into the game.
RPI RANKED: On Tuesday, the NCAA released the first RPI Rankings of the 2026 season. The Lions opened the polls at No. 98 — the highest mark in school history at the Division I level. North Alabama finished 137th in 2018 and 167th in 2025. Currently, the next-closest UAC opponent is Abilene Christian, ranked 206th, followed by Eastern Kentucky at 208th. The Lions' only loss this season has been against Cal Baptist, who currently ranks 38th.
NEXT GAME: The Lions return home to host their first-ever game at Bobby Wallace Field at Bank Independent Stadium against Eastern Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.
