CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (September 27, 2026) – The University of North Alabama women's soccer team earned its second consecutive road conference win after defeating Austin Peay 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Morgan Bros. Field in Clarksville.
North Alabama (5-1-3, 2-0-0 UAC) scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of action. Former Gov, Alana Owens, had an opportunity after the keeper tried to clear it; Owens used the left foot to net the first goal in the third minute. Gracie Tyrrell then gave the ball to Meg Welsh in the 10th as she nailed a shot outside of the 18' over a leaping Governor goalkeeper.
Austin Peay (1-9-1, 0-2-0 UAC) scored their lone goal of the game in the 55th minute from Anna Drexel. The Govs got more aggressive in the final 45 minutes of play with five corner kicks; all of their shots on target came in the second half of play.
UNA had 17 shots today with 10 on goal. Through two conference games, the Lions hold averages of 18 shots and 10 on target. The team added three more corner kicks to their season totals, as well.
This was UNA's third consecutive victory over the Govs dating back to last season. North Alabama earned a 2-1 victory over Austin Peay on Oct. 2 of last season for its first win over the Govs in program history.
All three wins over the Govs the last two seasons have been by a score of 2-1.
Owens assumed the mantle of shot leader with three today and led the team as marksman with her two on goal. Welsh, Emerson Nieroda and Mya Barr each had two shots with Barr nearly having her first collegiate goal before the Gov keeper tipped it outside of cage.
Outside of those four, seven other Lions had a shot attempt. Tyrrell earned her fourth assist of the season, a metric she has been tied in the top three for in the UAC.
Welsh's fourth goal of the season moved her into sole possession of team leader. The sophomore forward tied Anna Fugarino with three after her game-winning goal against West Georgia earlier this week.
The backline comprised of Avery Smith, Adelyn Speight, Lilly Ford, Langley Wallace and Tyrrell were tremendous as they allowed just two shots on goal through the entirety of the game. These five, alongside the rest of the defense, allowed five totals shots on target this week. Smith and Tyrrell notably had several slide tackles to thwart advancement opportunities from the Govs.
North Alabama kicked off conference play at West Georgia and Austin Peay, securing two wins on the road. The Lions last accomplished such a feat in 2023 at Jacksonville State (1-0) and at Kennesaw State (2-0).
This is Chris Walker's 110th win in his career as the North Alabama head coach. He now sits two wins away from the most all-time wins by a head coach in North Alabama program history; currently Graham Winkworth owns the title with 111.
Twenty Lions found playing time in this one as four players competed full time in Speight, Dorfman, Gracie Tyrrell and Lilly Ford. Fugarino led the reserves with 45 minutes played as captain Charlotte Sobotka was close behind with 38.
North Alabama gets a week's worth of rest before opening Bank Independent Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. against the UAC Blue Division's other 2-0 team — Eastern Kentucky. EKU beat Austin Peay (3-0) on Thursday and West Georgia (2-1) on Sunday.
