McTavish is currently CPR, First Aid and AED certified.

Before arriving in Richmond, he spent a great deal of time working with local athletes and teams in the Baltimore and Washington D.C. metro area. His first role as a strength coach began at Sarge Athletics, a private facility located in Ijamsville, Md.

He received his master’s degree from VCU in sport leadership and his undergraduate degree in recreation and sport studies from Shepherd University, where he was a standout on the Ram's men's basketball team.

At Shephered, he averaged a team-high 16.4 points per game and hit 89 three-pointers while being named second team All-Mountain East Conference as a senior. He played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Presbyterian College and is a 2011 graduate of South Carroll High School in Maryland.
