Tom Berryman

Tom Berryman enters his fourth season as assistant coach at North Alabama. He came to UNA after serving two seasons as director of basketball operations at Southeast Missouri State.

In three seasons at North Alabama, Berryman has helped the Lions reached the ASUN Conference Tournament each year, including a berth in the championship game in 2021. During his tenure, UNA has had six all-conference selections, including four on the league's All-Freshman Team and one All-Academic pick.

In his first year at SEMO, Berryman helped Southeast to a 10-game increase in the win column as the Redhawks were the 22nd Most Improved Team in NCAA Division I basketball. He also worked with a pair of All-OVC selections in guards Denzel Mahoney and Antonius Cleveland. Mahoney, the OVC Freshman of the Year, was also named Second Team All-OVC and OVC all-tournament. Cleveland earned First Team All-OVC honors and became the first Southeast player to participate in the College Slam Dunk Championship. Cleveland is currently playing in the NBA with the Atlanta Hawks.

During the 2017-18 season, Berryman continued to assist with the development of the Southeast Missouri guards. Sophomore guard Denzel Mahoney was named First Team All-OVC, while freshman guard Ledarrius Brewer was named to the league’s All-Newcomer Team.

Berryman also provided leadership and oversight of the team’s academic performance. Southeast basketball had the largest grade point average increase (0.61) of all Redhawk athletic teams from the Fall of 2016 to the Fall of 2017. Additionally, the team GPA of 3.08 was the highest of all men’s athletic teams at Southeast during the Fall of 2017.

Prior to Southeast Missouri, Berryman spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Charleston. He helped implement the Golden Eagle defense that lead the Mountain East Conference in defensive field goal percentage, defensive 3-point field goal percentage, and rebounding margin during the 2014-15 season. Berryman was also responsible for developing post the players during his time at Charleston. Three of these players, Aleks Kesic, Jevonte Hughes and Justin Coleman earned All-Conference honors.

Berryman has 11 years of coaching experience, including four as a member of Anthony Grant’s staff at the University of Alabama. He served as Alabama’s video coordinator during the 2013-14 season and was responsible for all aspects of video operations, which included assisting with team scouting reports, analyzing film for postgame analysis, creating individual player edits and managing the team’s video library.

Alabama experienced both team and individual success during Berryman’s time with the program. The Crimson Tide made three postseason appearances in Berryman’s four years, including a trip to the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Alabama also won the 2011 SEC Western Division title.

Berryman also worked with four players who were selected to a total of eight All-SEC teams. These include JaMychal Green of the Memphis Grizzlies and Tony Mitchell, who played with the Milwaukee Bucks. Fourteen players from Berryman’s tenure at Alabama went on to play professionally.

Before joining the University of Alabama program, Berryman spent three years coaching in the high school ranks. He spent two seasons (2008-2010) at Northridge High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he served as the head freshman coach and as a varsity assistant. Berryman was also the head junior varsity coach and a varsity assistant at Holt High School for the 2007-2008 season.

During the summer of 2006, Berryman worked as an intern at IMG Basketball Academy in Bradenton, Florida. During his time there, he worked under the tutelage of Mike Moreau, one of the nation’s top skill development coaches. Berryman assisted Moreau in skill development workouts for numerous professional and collegiate players. He also served as an instructor for IMG’s high school summer camps.

Additionally, Berryman is a member of the Board of Directors for Rising Coaches Elite, an organization dedicated to the career development of young collegiate coaches. He was appointed to this position in 2013.

Berryman earned two degrees from the University of Alabama. He graduated with honors in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. In 2012, he completed his master’s degree in human performance, which included an emphasis in sport management.

Berryman and his wife, Kinsey, were married in 2015. The couple has one daughter, Ella.
