HUNTSVILLE – After dropping the opening set 27-25, the University of North Alabama volleyball team rebounded to post three straight victories and record a 3-1 win over UAH Saturday afternoon at Spragins Hall. The 25-27, 25-10, 25-18, 25-11 victory gives the Lions a 16-9 overall record with a 12-4 mark in Gulf South Conference play. The win, along with Valdosta State's 3-0 loss at Christian Brothers on the same day, puts UNA in third place in the GSC standings.
Natasha Fomina set a new career high with 20 kills on the day to lead all players. The sophomore from Broomfield, Colo., added five digs, a block and a .529 hitting percentage.
Megan Gorey added 17 kills and four service aces for the Lions. Victoria Quintanilla turned in a season-high 12 kills while Megan Wadsworth also reached double figures in the category with 10 kills for UNA.
The win gives North Alabama a season sweep over the Chargers after posting a 3-0 victory over UAH on Sept. 20 at Flowers Hall. For the match, the Lions held a 65-35 advantage in kills and a 73-55 advantage in digs. UNA also produced a .343 team hitting percentage while the Chargers were held to a .126 showing on the day.
Andrea De Leon had 50 assists and a match-high 19 digs. Ashtyn Kapopich (12 digs) and Shantel Federick (11 digs) also recorded double digits for the Lions.
UNA will host its final regular-season home match next Tuesday against Union. The team will honor seniors Joanna Calhoun, Shantel Federick, Megan Gorey and LeAnna Lloyd after the final set. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
