FLORENCE – Four players reached double figures in kills as the University of North Alabama volleyball team held off UAH for a 3-1 victory Thursday evening at Flowers Hall. Two of the four sets went to extra points, including the final game of the 25-16, 24-26, 25-22, 27-25 UNA victory.
With the win, the Lions improve to 22-6 on the season and avenge a 3-0 loss to the Chargers on Oct. 1 in Huntsville. North Alabama also moves into sole possession of second place in the GSC standings. With a 15-2 league record, the Lions are a half game ahead of Valdosta State.
On Thursday, UNA had trouble putting the Chargers away after taking an early lead with a 25-16 win in the opening set. The following three sets were decided by seven combined points.
In the second game, UAH reached set point with a 24-19 lead before the Lions rallied. After five straight UNA points tied the set, however, UAH scored two straight points to claim the victory.
The Chargers led 20-17 in the third set before another UNA late rally. This time, the Lions held on for the win. Lexie Bradley had three of her five kills for the game down the stretch, including the game-winner.
The final set featured 14 ties and another UNA comeback as the Lions rallied from a 17-12 deficit. Natasha Fomina recorded six of her match-high 16 kills in the frame. Victoria Quintanilla added five kills in the game, including a swing that tied the game at 18-18. Neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way.
North Alabama reached set point first with a 24-22 lead. The Chargers answered with three straight points to claim a set point of their own at 25-24. The match ended with a pair of kills by Fomina sandwiched around a ball handling error against UAH.
Jessica Austin added 13 kills and six blocks for UNA. As a team, the Lions had 12 total blocks, reaching double digits in the category for just the fourth time this season. Quintanilla added 12 kills while Bradley finished the night with 11 kills for North Alabama.
Andrea De Leon turned in a double-double with 53 assists and 10 digs. Ashtyn Kapovich led all UNA players with 15 digs on the night. Peyton Lang was close behind with 14 digs for the Lions.
Haley Snyder and Anna LeDuc led UAH (18-12 overall, 9-8 GSC) with 10 kills each.
UNA will play its final home game Friday against Mississippi College. The Lions will celebrate Senior Day after the match, honoring the team's lone senior, De Leon. Match time is set for 5 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
